Elder or Younger Futhark?

The Elder Futhark, with 24 runes, was used from about the 2nd to the 8th century. In the Viking Age it was cut down to the 16-rune Younger Futhark, so one rune had to stand for several sounds: Týr covers both t and d, and Kaun covers k and g. In England the runes went the other way and grew into the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc.

Pick Elder Futhark for a closer letter-by-letter match. Pick Younger Futhark for the runes actually carved on Viking rune stones.

Transliteration, not translation

This tool swaps English letters for runes; the words stay English. Vikings carved Old Norse, so for the Viking language itself, translate with the Old Norse translator first and then convert the result to runes. Rune stones often separated words with dots, which is what the word divider option adds.

Before you get a rune tattoo

Double-check every rune, and remember that the Younger Futhark loses some distinctions between letters. If you want the words themselves in Old Norse, check the translation with a specialist.

Rune Translator: FAQ

Should I use Elder or Younger Futhark?

Elder Futhark matches English letters more closely. Younger Futhark is what Vikings actually used, but with only 16 runes it is less exact.

Do runes have meanings?

Each rune had a name, such as Fehu (“cattle, wealth”), known from medieval rune poems. Most of the magical and divination meanings sold today are modern inventions.

Why are there dots between words?

Rune stones often used dots or small crosses as word dividers. You can turn them off.
